The Order of the Vagrant
Wulburt the Addled: Human: Lv 19 Abjuration Wizard
Little is known about the history of the infamously tight-lipped wizard. It was so incredibly rare that one would actually hear him speak that it became rumored that Wulburt had long lost his mind; something that the overly paranoid arcane master never sought to correct. Being the oldest living member of the Order of the Vagrant, many assume Wulburt to be its founder, though painful memories prevent the old wizard from speaking on the Order’s storied history.
Pemgrave the Virtuous: Human: Lv 18 Oath of the Watchers Paladin
A veteran warrior in the service of Helm, God of Protection, Pemgrave spent the majority of his life in service to the people of the material plane. It was six years ago, during a hunt for a fire giant, when Pemgrave first encountered Wulburt. The young paladin was skeptical of the strange old man’s talk of a secret order of the world’s most powerful defenders, but some time later he managed to find his way back.
Serene D'Morte: Drow: Lv 15 Shadow Magic Sorcerer
Born the sole daughter of a waning drow house in the Underdark, Serene’s earliest memories were of repeated assassination attempts on her life. Endowed with the power to command the shadows themselves, Serene became a weapon in the hands of her mother as she attempted to return her house to its former glory. When she disappeared amidst the chaos of a bloody revolution, Serene’s absence guaranteed her family a painful death. Now she relies on Wulburt to keep her hidden from the ever watching eyes of Menzoberranzan.
Brienne of Bostly: Sea Elf: Lv 20 Path of the Storm Barbarian
Native to the wild, tempestuous seas of the feywild, Brienne was first dragged from her home by pirates raiding for magical artifacts. It wasn’t until her encounter with Filo, a heavy handed brawler who knocked out a handful of her teeth in a tavern in Bostly, that Brienne decided to take off and travel with Filo. It took rolling a few heads, but surviving pirates quickly relented and Brienne ditched her life of raiding and pillaging for a life of adventuring with the only man she had ever respected.
Filo Themmes: Human: Lv 16 Champion Fighter
Before that fateful night in Bostly, Filo’s life was remarkably… unremarkable. He was dying, lost inside of his own sorrow and trying to drown himself in ale when a massive lumbering eladrin bumped into him. He was ten different kinds of twisted, so the red faced lush didn’t pick up on the fact that everyone else in the bar was keeping a wide berth from the tall, heavily armed barbarian. Filo stood up from the table as his beer was spilled to the floor and immediately took a hefty swing at the surprised woman. It was unclear whether he blacked out form the alcohol or from the first punch, but Filo woke up several days later on the back of a horse a long way from Bostly. From that moment forward, the surprisingly cheery sea elf treated Filo as if they had been friends since birth. The pair spent years adventuring together before they found themselves in the employ wizard Wulburt and his Order of Vagrants.
Baelor the Witty: Human: Lv 14 College of Glamour Bard
Renown through the province of Vellemshan, Baelor was hardly surprised to receive his invitation to the secret shadow society known as the Order of Vagrants. He had just finished performing Bolentini’s Concerto for the court of the Duchess of Lillivale when he arrived back in his suite to find a peculiar old man waiting for him. Field missions were typically beneath his station, leaving such work to the more martial members of the order while he and Wulburt focused their attentions on the more grand schemes. When he first learned of Wulburt’s intentions to capture and destroy Hileth the Lord of Subjugation, Baelor immediately began work on what would surely be his magnum opus.
Raevan Stonejaw: Orc: Lv 18 Gloomstalker Ranger
Daughter of Rojhak Stonejaw, chieftain of the third largest orcish tribe in all of the Daunt, Raevan was often mocked for her diminutive stature. However, refusing to allow any of his offspring to be perceived as weak, Rojhak taught his daughter how to break an opponent. The young huntress swiftly built up a reputation for being fearsome, though she never deliberately sought conflict, instead choosing to simply deal with conflict as it sought her. On the day of her twenty eighth birthday, Raevan was sparring with her father when he was issued a challenge of ascension by a rival warrior. Desperate to not let her aging father be killed over a challenge to his station, Raevan issued a challenge of her own. Inside the fighting pits, Raevan quickly dispatched her father’s would-be killer, but despite attempting to forfeit the rite, Rojhak refused to allow her to submit. Ravean laid down her weapons, but still the elder chieftain advanced, reigning down one potentially lethal blow after another. In order to spare her father’s life, Raevan was forced to cripple the man and flee the tribe if she wanted to avoid being forced to execute him. She spent years surviving on her own in the cursed forests of Thule before she was brought into the fold by an old wizard with a need for someone adept at hunting and killing monsters.
Rodhan: Wood Elf: Lv 19 Assassin Rogue
Rodhan was raised from birth to be Saludhan, a forest guardian. From the moment he was capable of drawing a bow, Rodhan spent every waking hour of his life in training. Long nights, brutal days, all of it spent in dedication to a destiny that he had no say over. One day, the elf finally couldn’t take it anymore, being sentenced to an eternal life of servitude was something the warrior could no longer abide. Rodhan eliminated the entirety of his squadron and attempted to flee from the mystical forests of Tsar Dunn. However, far from being the most accomplished warrior amongst the Saludhan, Rodhan never made it beyond the shaded hills of the forest before being captured and returned to face judgment for his crimes. On the evening before he was set to be executed, the young elven outlaw was visited in his cell by a peculiar old human who offered him an opportunity to atone for his sins while carving his own path forward.
Myshallah: Tabaxi: Lv 17 Way of the Astral Self Monk
Myshallah spent many years adventuring with the cleric Tyber, renowned across the material plane for his role in helping to thwart an insidious plot to summon the horrific dragon deity Tiamat. The tabaxi monk followed the dragonborn cleric wherever he went, lending their aid wherever they could until one day he decided to hang up his hammer and spend his time providing aid more peacefully. As such, Myshallah and Tyber settled down in a quaint little hamlet outside of the capital city of Ash Star, building themselves a small temple dedicated to the worship of Lathander. Over the years, Myshallah gladly spent her days laboring for those who needed and though her days of battling evil seemed to be through, the disciplined monk never allowed her skills to wane. One day whilst meditating amongst the river gardens, Myshallah was approached by her dear old friend Tyber. The kindly dragonkin was trailed by a quiet old man dressed in elegant crimson and white robes. Tyber introduced the wizard as an old friend of his, someone in desperate need of capable fighters who could help defend the material plane from threats across the multiverse. Myshallah tried to refuse, stating that her place was alongside Tyber, helping people in need. However, the wise old cleric explained that he had kept her from her calling long enough, that it was time for her to take his place in the fight against the darkness.
Winnona: Tiefling: Lv 20 Infernal Warlock
Born in the slums of Ash Star, Winnona knew nothing but poverty for the first two decades of her life. She scrounged for every scrap she could get her hands on, fighting like hell to survive. One evening, when the young tiefling was at her absolute lowest, starving and in desperate need of medical intervention, she managed to swipe a heavy coin purse off of an upper city cockstain who was making a victory lap through the slums to lord over his lessers. Winnona managed to escape the scene with only a minor knife wound across her back. While she poured through her haul, pocketing an impressive handful of gold silver and even a few platinum coins, she stumbled across a strange, black coin. The material it was made from was unlike anything she had ever seen before and it felt hot resting in her palm. She inspected the odd piece very carefully when suddenly she began to hear soft whispers coming from every dark corner of the alley. This disembodied voice was that of Sul Khatesh, a being that made herself known as one of many demon lords polluting the nine hells. The demonic entity was impressed by the young tiefling’s resolve and made her an offer. In exchange for her immortal soul, Sul Khatesh would provide Winnona with the power to remove every ounce of hardship from her life.
Charon Glimmerfist: Dwarf: Lv 17 Light Domain Cleric
Once a cleric in the service of the High King of Hjallorock, Charon became disillusioned with keeping soldiers alive just so they could press forward and deal death to others. Stepping down from his service, Charon was exiled from the mountain kingdom, forbidden from ever returning. The dwarven cleric pressed forward, using his faith to lend aid to those in need in the fight against the forces of darkness. One evening Charon was visited in his dreams by an avatar of his holy lord, Pellor, the God of the Sun. His god explained the gathering of a secret collective seeking to rid the hells of one of the most vile creatures to ever curse the planes of existence. Without hesitation the humble cleric took up his hammer and set out for the city of Ash Star
Dellor Grovetender: Firbolg: Lv 19 Circle of the Land Druid
Dellor spent the majority of their days in animal form, basking in the warm glow of the sun as it lingered over the quiet woodland grove of Zasshira Forest. A very solitary being, Dellor very much preferred the company of their animal companions to that of the more humanoid races that continued to spread across the material plane. However, occasional situations would arise when Dellor would be required to shed their animal guise in order to repel those who weren’t able to harmonize with the grove’s existence. One evening, while enjoying the chorus of nearby bullywugs singing their melodic song, Dellor sensed a strange and powerful presence entering the grove. The stoic firbolg took their natural form and met the quiet human not far from the grove’s entrance. The old man bowed his head and dropped to his knees as Dellor approached, treating the silent guardian with an amount of deference that was quite rare coming from humans. The humble wizard produced a small seed from his robe, extending his palm towards Dellor to give him a gift, a dormant seed of a species of tree whose extinction had been felt all across the material plane. With this thoughtful, poignant gift, the wizard made a desperate request of Dellor, to aid him in the single greatest struggle for survival that history would ever know.
The Forces of Hell
Hileth the Subjugator: CR 40: Large Fiend
Hileth the Subjugator, The Unconsecrated, Dark Queen of the Black Citadel had long been one of the most potent, influential beings in all of the nine hells. Though not quite infamous across the material plane, thanks to her preference to remain in her palace, enjoying the fruits of her infernal conquest, Hileth’s reputation to those who knew of her was that of a selfish, twisted monstrosity. Agents of Hileth’s sick agenda would appear on every plane of the multiverse, spreading her signature brand of agonizing pleasure and saccharine pain. Nearly nothing is known of Hileth’s fighting style, since nearly every opponent she had ever faced in the blood wars had perished by her hand eons ago. Though if the devils who commanded her forces in her stead were anything to go on, it could be expected that Hileth would relish every second of toying with her prey before extracting a painful, excruciating demise. Hileth’s overwhelming strength was born of her powerful, primal instincts which she had spent millenia cultivating. As such, she had resisted every opportunity to reign in desires. Instead, the demoness splintered off three small fragments of her soul, forging them into three different aspects of her personality. As these three Avatars of Hileth took on forms of their own, chaos erupted through the hells before the surviving demon lords banded together to craft a demiplane within the hells to gift to Hileth in the hopes that she would retreat there with her three terrible avatars and grant the hells a moment of peace.
Aspect of Rage: CR 15: Small Fiend
The third and smallest of Hileth’s avatars, the Aspect of Rage was only considered to be the weakest of the avatars when compared to the other two. Despite her smaller stature, Rage had yet to meet any single combatant whom she could not tear asunder with her bare hands. Had it not been for Hileth’s lack of competent enemies, the Aspect of Rage may very well have grown too large for even Hileth herself to control.
Aspect of Hunger: CR 21: Huge Fiend
The second of Hileth’s avatars, the Aspect of Hunger dwarfed both Rage and even Hileth herself in size. While outside eyes might witness nothing more than a mindless beast attempting to fill her gullett with anyone and everyone unfortunate enough to cross her path, Hunger represented much more than Hileth’s insatiable appetite. In fact the monstrous woman was born of the devil’s incomprehensible greed. And while not being wielded by her master for her unrelenting drive, the Aspect of Hunger spent most of her days guarding Hileth’s vast horde of priceless treasures, eagerly awaiting her next meal.
Aspect of Lust: CR 28: Gargantuan Fiend
Hileth’s firstborn and the largest of her avatars, the Aspect of Lust represented the most prominent side of Hileth’s personality. It was Lust’s seemingly constant growth and inability to control herself that finally made Hileth accept the offer from the lords of the hells to retreat into her own personal demiplane. Hileth had seen countless demons, devils and tortured souls disappear into her avatar’s hungry cunt and insatiable asshole. For many years, this ritualistic sacrifice of hell’s denizens into her own immense orifices only served to feed her lust, thus making the Aspect even larger and more powerful. And while she delighted in the feeling she got from letting Lust run loose across the sulfurous pits, Hileth knew that the hells could not survive if precautions were not taken.
Falthoraxx the Despised: CR 9: Medium Fiend
An upstart cambion, recently freed from their service to Dagos the pit fiend. Falthoraxx seeks to carve out their own place amongst the hells. A foothold from which their terrible legacy will be written.
