FINAL CHAPTER
HE AWOKE IN the smoldering crater left behind by his own footstep, blindsided by the bitter taste of ashes in his mouth and the sting of dirt rubbed into newly formed wounds. He was a mere mortal again, small and insignificant. Around him, he could hear the wails of pain and distant shrieks through the desolation. His head pounded, the light seared his eyes, and he rested his head against the rubble to stare numbly at the rising plumes of dust and smoke.
