Brittney's New Remote - Prologue

Tuesday, 2:47PM

The sound of a clock would tick. Students casually talked as they awaited the final bell for the school to conclude the day in the science lab. All Brittney could see was eternal darkness, the sound of her breathing overlapping the voices of her peers. Visual images that wouldn't make sense but grasping some visual cues that could be remembered.

"Brittney, wake up." A voice called out.

Brittney's blue eyes began to open, and her head was placed down on the lab table that she appeared to fall asleep on. She got up, her vision being hazy as she looked around, oblivious to the moment she passed out during the lecture.

"Huh, I'm all here..." She slurred

"The bell is about to ring, are we staying after class for the project?" The voice asked.

Brittney rubbed her eyes, moving her blonde hair that would go past her shoulders, turning her head to her friend Stephanie.

"I knew that Latte was going to crash you, you're lucky I moved my bag in front of your face so the professor wouldn't snoop you out. That is if you snored any louder." She warned.

Stephanie, such a friend she was. From the lack of sleep Brittney had, it was clear her studies were taking a toll, but not just her studies were in the way, there was a lab project that they needed to work on for Chemistry.

"Relax Steph, I'm still here and not in trouble. It's fine-" She said, yawning.

"Besides, I'm ahead of my work. I'm sure the professor wouldn't mind if I shut my eyes for a bit." She rolled her eyes with a smile.

Stephanie rolled her eyes, her arms crossing to show her disapproval.

"Yeah, I'm sure he would let you slack off and sleep all day, huh? Fix your bow before I do it for you." She pointed at her chest.

Brittney licked her lips, looking down at her bowtie which seemed to be crooked. All the students who attended Pinecreek Academy were expected to be in uniform. Loafers, skirts, dress shirts and all. The dress code regulations were a pain in the ass at times.

"Ah, right. Don't want me to go to get written up next, huh, Steph?" She giggled.

Brittney began to fix her black bowtie, standing up as she would pat down her white dress shirt, fluffing the bottom of her black and blue plaided skirt. Her black knee socks were fine as they were just like the black loafers she wore. Looking over to Stephanie, she was dressed the same as all the other girls did. The only differences were the ties and shoe colors between brown and black.

"Well, are you done checking me out? We can go get some snacks while everyone is leaving. Or are we just going to wait it out...?" She asked

Stephanie rolled her stool over to Brittney as her body faced her. Admittedly her own green eyes were staring too hard than she should of. She didn't swing that way, she was quite zoned out. She shook her head as her shoulder-length hair flowed with the motion.

"No, not like that. I also wouldn't do that considering how much of a rush everyone is at this time, I'd rather wait. But if you want to get trampled, go ahead." She warned.

"I suppose you're right. We got some time-"

The bell finally rang, and everyone in the lab room began to rise from the chairs, beginning to pour out of the room. It was no surprise anyone wanted to stay after a school day. Steph and Brittney however chose to sacrifice their own free time to catch up on some homework.

Stephanie remained seated on the chair, spinning it towards the table while Brittney hopped up, sitting on the edge of the table as she dangled her legs back and forth. At times she lightly tapped the heels of her black loafers on the wooden exterior of that very table.

"Wow, look at us. Seems like we care about our education than others." She joked.

"That's because you decided to do this at the last minute."

"Ah, come on. You knew it was worth it." Brittney replied.

"You knew we had to go to the strip to get that CD album when it dropped. Otherwise, we would have been shit out of luck." Brittney added.

"I only went because you don't have a car. I had to drive you."

Stephanie's head turned to Brittney with her eyes narrowed, showing her annoyance with her excuses. If she had other things to say, it was best to reserve those thoughts.

"Right. Well, it is what it is. Not like we were going to do anything tonight anyway." Brittney shrugged.

"I wanted to go to Lori's house to hang out."

"Huh? Why her? Didn't she try to start beef with you from that one guy, Lucus, right? From that one party. At least from what I remember" Brittney pointed out.

Stephanie sighed, clearly her friend was just as dense as she looked at times. A typical blonde you could claim her to be. As much Steph enjoyed Brittney's company, she can be a handful of times. She sighed as her eyes closed, then opened, turning away.

"No Britt, you did because you were intoxicated at the party and made a comment about his ass which was her boyfriend at the time. I stepped in because you had no idea what was going on and vomited on her porch and dipped. She was pissed at you, not me. You don't even remember I drove you home?" Stephanie asked.

Brittney continued to sit there on the table, clearly being quite an annoyance. Brittney was dense at times, sure, but she knew when she may have been becoming a bit of a handful. She did start feeling embarrassed about that night once more. It happened last month, it wasn't the best time of her life despite her years into adulthood.

"Ah, okay, I get it. Spare me the lecture of what I did wrong." She said.

Brittney began to stand, everyone cleared out of the room by now, as did the Professor. They had permission to stick around for a few hours to finish the work they fell behind on. The professor however has been quite strict when it came to students. It was a surprise they were given access to this room after hours but were instructed to lock the doors whether inside the room or not.

There was a brief silence, Stephanie decided to open her bag as she would set up the chemistry homework on the table, she was waiting for Brittney to follow the lead. They had a presentation to work on. Brittney began doing what was instructed, locking the door that led out to the hallway, and sitting down on the stool next to Stephanie.

"Do you think it's weird for Adam, sorry, I mean Professor Adam to give weird instructions to lock the door like this? Kinda creeeepy if I do say so myself." Brittney pondered.

"I'm sure he has his reasons, probably doesn't trust people like you. Makes sense really-"

"Do you think that though? I mean, that's suspicious. I bet he's hiding something." Brittney interrupted. "Like, how often does a guy tell students, especially female ones to lock the door while he's out and about when we just want to do our homework."

Stephanie would be writing and looking over her textbook while her friend was going on a tangent. To Stephanie, this was rather distracting. She, however, could not deny that it was a bit weird for a Professor to give a command like that.

"Well, what do you think he's hiding then?" Stephanie turned her head to Brittney as if she were on to something. "I don't define him weird or anything like that. But for real, it is a little weird now that I think about it."

Brittney began to give a smug face, bumping her elbow against her elbow in a playful matter. It seems Brittney figured out how to get Stephanie distracted to procrastinate her work.

"I meaaan we're here now to figure that out. How about we just...do some detective work? This guy probably is cheating on his wife, or perhaps, I bet he's dating some students and has a stash somewhere!" Brittney assumed.

Stephanie couldn't believe the assumption that her friend would make. Cheating? Dating the students? That was absurd. The thing was, could Brittney be on to something?

"Okay, I'll bite. What's your goal here? Distract yourself from doing homework or wanting to bust this guy out of his job? This is all stupid." Stephanie pondered, tapping her chin with the eraser tip of the pencil. "Okay Britt, since you're so engrossed you can figure that out on yourself while I'm being productive."

Brittney was surprised she was able to convince Stephanie just like that. However, she still was more willing to do her work. This was no fun. The funny thing about all this is Brittney was just pulling these assumptions out of her ass. It was crazy that it was enough to sound convincing. Perhaps there were things in this lab that were hidden?

Silence struck once more, Brittney pondered as she left Steph to do the homework. She walked to the row of windows, eyeing below that the courtyard could be seen and occupying a few students. Some reading, studying, and throwing a ball around. Slowly she walked over to the Professor's desk just out of curiosity.

"Britt, don't go doing what I think you're going to do..." Stephanie warned.

Brittney eyed Steph as she reacted about her approaching the desk. She grinned, plotting her rear on the spinning office hair he had. She spun herself around, teasing Stephanie as she knew she was worried about her doing something she shouldn't be doing.

"Oh, look at meee! Are you going to yell at me Steph for having some fun? Ahah~!" She giggled. "I'm surprised this chair is sti-Woah!"

There was a sudden tumble as if something fell over. Something did fall over. It was the chair and Brittney who was once on it. She fell on her side as Stephanie alarmingly got up, running for her.

"Brittney! What the hell!? Are you okay!?" She panicked.

Brittney was more than okay, a bit dizzy considering she carelessly was horsing around. Suppose she deserved this for having too much fun while there was work to be done. Steph kneeled, offering a hand as she knew Brittney looked fine. This could have been worse.

"You're fucking immature and stupid. You know that, right?" She said sternly, offering a hand.

"Ah, stop it. I'm fine. I was just messing around too much is all." She replied.

Brittney accepted her mistake, finally coming to her senses to do something productive since that was the main reason they were here after all. She reached for the hand that Steph offered but something caught her eye as from her perspective, she could see a key that was taped underneath the desk.

Brittney declined the hand that Steph offered, instead, ripping the key off as it was duct taped. This was quite strange considering this wasn't meant to be seen by anyone. It seemed quite intentional. Stephanie didn't say anything at first, raising a brow as she pulled her hand away.

"Is that a key? What's it taped under there?" She crouched, pondering.

"Looks like it. I mean, it is...but for what?"

"Looks like it goes to a safe or a case maybe? I don't think we should be touching that Britt, this is more than what we can probably handle. Report it maybe?" Stephanie suggested.

"Oh no, no, we're not telling anyone about this. I'd say we figure this out. Remember the creepy stuff I mentioned? This could lead to it." Brittney was more than intrigued, she was sold on this investigation. At first, this situation was something she pulled out of her ass. But now? Something bigger was developing. A mysterious key duct taped under a desk?

"If we report it, we get busted for snooping around. So I think we need to shut up about this and figure this out. Wait, hold on..."

"No Brittney, this is more than we can get ourselves into. We can't just start snooping around and play detective. Even if he's a creep, we need to reach out...hey, are you even listening to me!?" She raised her voice.

Brittney began to get up, holding the key as she ripped the rest of the tape off. She walked past Stephanie who was rambling on. In reality, she ignored her but didn't ignore her. She dismissed it. She approached the door that led to the Professor's office connected to the lab, clearly, somewhere students weren't allowed. Stephanie gasped as Brittney opened the door which was already unlocked.

"Oh, no, no we aren't going in there. Britt, that's not smart. You're being a dumbass right now, a dumbass for going in there! You're going to get us in trouble more than we already are!" Stephanie followed.

"Well, the door was already unlocked. Guess he forgot. Or was it ever locked? Come on, he's gone for the night anyway. We can take a look at what we can get and dip. Just in and out. Simple. Just keep watch if you want to be a pussy about it." Brittney said.

The audacity for Brittney to call her out, this girl would do whatever she wanted. It was crazy how she got into this Institute, to begin with. There were many questions Stephanie had, but they would never be answered, especially if involving Brittney. All she had to do was look out for her. Regardless of what Stephanie knew from her right and wrong, she followed, this could lead to something.

"I hope you know Professor Adams isn't going to appreciate any of this. You do realize this, right? This is all reckless, you're always so reckless."

"Oh stop worrying girl, you're always quick to assume the worst. We're going to be out of here by the time he even considers coming back." Brittney rolled her eyes.

The two girls would enter the office, by a flick of a switch, the lights on the ceiling would blare, revealing the familiar white tile flooring and walls that matched the lab. This office space showed the important space that involved Professor Adam. What could be seen was a bookshelf, and an L-shaped desk with a computer on it, turned off. The girls looked around, eyeing if something seemed out of place.

"I don't care. You know this seems wrong, I hate the fact you're so confident getting yourself into places you shouldn't be. Have you ever gone to jail before? Just curious." Stephanie asked.

Brittney laughed, turning around as she shook her head. It was adorable that Stephanie was so concerned about her well-being. That only proved that Stephanie was a good friend and was able to stick with her no matter what.

"You're cute when you get like this. Even though you're so concerned, you're going down with me since you followed me here silly." Brittney smiled, flicking Stephanie's forehead

Stephanie didn't appreciate the flick as her right hand came over to her forehead. She mused about the thought, she really would get busted at this point. Brittney got her on a leash for now, she became quiet as the girls looked around in the room. Nothing looked out of place. They had been searching for a good few minutes.

"Okay, Britt, I think we've had enough in here. Let's get going..."

"Hold on a minute, maybe we aren't looking at the right spot. See that tile right there? Something seems out of place, under the desk."

Brittney dismissed Stephanie as something caught her eye on the tile flooring. A section had seemed to be tampered with. Despite Brittney being a stereotypical blondie, she was clever enough to sniff out something that may lead them in the right direction, whatever they were looking for.

Brittney crouched, then got on her knees with her tooshie sticking out, facing towards Stephanie. In reaction to this, Stephanie looked away as she didn't need to see what Brittney was trying to display.

"...And you found what exactly...?" She had to ask.

Brittney didn't respond, she would pick up a corner of the tile, lifting it and leaning it against the side of the desk. She peeled another tile that popped out, what revealed underneath was a makeshift hole with a small suitcase, enough to hold documents and an object inside.

This did catch Brittney by surprise, even Stephanie who looked over her shoulder, observing as Brittney dared to take the suitcase out with her bare hands. In reality, this didn't feel right for Steph, but could Brittney be right with what she said before?

"...Well are you going to open it?" Steph said, impatiently.

Brittney was surprised to hear that, Steph always showed restraint during times like these. Brittney had no idea what to do or what she should do with this. That's when she held out the key, could this be it? She displayed the key to Steph, nodding as she swallowed, feeling her heart palpitations as she grew anxious with what lay inside the locked case.

With the insert of the key, the suitcase clicked open, this finally confirmed what the key was used for. This suitcase, whatever was inside of it was about to be revealed.

The case opened, showing a set of documents, and pictures that contained numerous people in lab coats, even Professor Adams himself in his younger years. These were things that were never mentioned. The company ' Lab-Co' could be displayed in one of the pictures. Neither of these girls heard about this place before.

"Wow, is that Professor Adam? Look how young he looks. Who are these people? Must be serious stuff if they're wearing lab coats like we do..." Stephanie pointed out.

"Yeah, not sure what this is about. These papers, there's pages and pages but a lot of it is blacked out and scribbled. Not exactly what I was expecting to find." Brittney stated.

The girls exchanged the photos, trying to gather what they could from these old documents. This certainly isn't what any of them expected, it seemed rather harmless what they were snooping into. However, there was one thing that was distinct about this whole discovery. A remote was found at the very bottom under the contents they had already gone through. Brittney investigated as she grabbed the remote.

"Huh? What's this thing? Property of Lab-Co? Never heard of it. Have you Steph?" Brittney asked.

In response, Stephanie shook her head. The remote looked like a silver remote that would belong to a television, one that was as big as Brittney's hand. It had its buttons, but these buttons had arrows that displayed Up and Down directions. There was another green button, another with a circle on it. It was quite confusing as she never used a remote like this before.

"Strange little thing. Hey, do you think he'd notice if we take it? Just curious what it does." Brittney asked.

Stephanie didn't like the idea, no matter what any of this was, it was completely wrong for Brittney to take anything out of this room. She put her foot down, protesting the idea as this was going on too long.

"No, put it back. We're not taking anything out, okay? We didn't find anything that you said and I'm feeling like this was a setup for you to snoop inside." Stephanie said.

"Awe, come on. Fine, I'll put it back. Give me a moment and take a look out for me, okay?" Brittney smiled.

Stephanie stood there, looking down at Brittney who was kneeling on the floor snooping inside the suitcase. She too stared at the remote, it was a weird device, but she didn't want to be involved. She mused, Brittney likely staying true to her word, decided to walk out of the office and kept an eye out.

Brittney was relieved that her friend would listen. This only fueled her to do what she was going to do. She began cleaning everything up, stuffing all the random piles of paper inside the suitcase the best as she could. The pictures she once more analyzed, something about this were interesting. She mused, tapping her chin, and looked at the silver handheld-sized remote. Something about this thing called to her. She had to keep it.

"Return it...? No way, I think I'll see what it does first then I'll think about it..." Brittney whispered

Brittney unwavering would begin backstabbing her friend, lying that she would put this item back. Instead, she had her greed take over and was not aware of the potential danger that she held in her hand. She cleaned up the scene, putting the tiles back in place. She still held the key, walking out as she put the remote in the right pocket of her top uniform.

The door would be heard to open, Stephanie looking over as she was looking out for her friend, one that stayed true to her word.

"Any evidence left behind? I don't want to be brought into the office Britt, we should get wrapped up on our homework here."

"Yeah, I know. Just going to tape this key back under his desk again. Otherwise he 'may' find out something is wrong." Brittney being one step ahead.

Brittney walked her way over to the desk after the office door closed, and the lights turned off. Ideally, everything was back to where it should be. But so many questions remained as to why that case was there. What was the professor hiding? What was that remote? Brittney was on edge, not trying to cause suspicion. The key would be returned when Brittney first found it.

Stephanie sighed, glad that was over. Once they were outside that office, they were at peace once again if someone, especially the Professor walked in at any moment. She eyed over at Brittney, putting trust in her. It wasn't every day that Brittney did the right thing, this time, she did the right thing. She was grateful for it.

"Sure, anything for you." Brittney laughed.

"You know, maybe that was pointless after all. At least we got to know more about our Professor. Maybe we should ask him about his past someday?" She added.

Stephanie walked over to the lab table, sitting on her stool as Brittney would do the same, sitting next to her as well. Stephanie did wonder about the Professor even more. Maybe he wasn't entirely a weird guy, bald, but he might be quite smart considering the discoveries that were made back in that office.

"Well, I wouldn't think it would hurt...seems quite a bit of a random question too. Think he would catch on to that?" Stephanie shrugged,

Brittney would likely forget to ask the question regardless. But for now, both girls began to start what they were supposed to do, the homework.

For the next two hours, they would work and work. They wrapped up what needed to get done.

At this time the sun beginning to set, and the orange glow would glaze through the windows, reflecting through the classroom to emphasize the glow even more. It was the sign of time to head home.

"Well Britt, we finally did it. Even after all that bullshit you pulled. Thank you for actually sticking through this." Stephanie congratulated them as they began to depart out of the room.

"Oh, please. I always had it in me, you know that." She laughed with a playful arm slap.

"Ah, well, you learn something new every day I guess. Anyway, I'm heading out now. See you tomorrow at class, yeah?" She gave a nod as the bag swung over her shoulder. "Also say hi to your brother for me!"

"Yeah, tomorrow. Fun. My brother? I'll make sure to tell Trey," Brittney replied.

The two girls began to walk down the hall, giving a wave as they went their ways. Brittney was able to not raise any suspicions as she went behind her friend's back. It was a shame,

Stephanie was genuinely proud that she kept her word, but that only became an utter lie. Brittney walked down the halls, entered the lockers in front of the school, and began to switch her loafers to the old white Converse shoes she had. Her black sock-covered toes would wiggle their way in as she slammed her feet down a few times, her feet finally locked inside the shoes. Brittney walked, leaving the building.

A block down she kept walking, eventually pulling out the remote from her pocket. She observed the unusual device. So many secrets to be revealed, she could do anything with it, whatever it did. Her first assumption it was for some sort of television or perhaps a futuristic vehicle. She pressed the buttons a few times, but it did nothing as of right now. It could be junk?

All Brittney knew she had a new remote. The problem was to operate it. Little did Brittney know, this remote had an unimaginable power. It was only up to her how to treat this power when that time came.
